The first Miners Feast and Music Festival sold out on Miner Street on Oct. 3. General admission was free. A $40 wristband covered tastings at nine or more local restaurants and drinks at local bars, according to the Clear Creek Courant. The festival raised more than $5,000 for Charlie's Place animal shelter in its first year, and organizers said it will return.
The next stretch looks different. In the six weeks from Halloween until Echo Mountain's projected Dec. 12 opening, the town's calendar settles onto a few local Saturdays. Meanwhile the I-70 project that has shaped the last three years of driving here has moved most of its disruption to overnight hours. For people who live in Idaho Springs, that combination opens more daytime room than this stretch of the year has offered in a while.
Most of the Floyd Hill Trouble Now Happens Overnight
The shift begins with the highway. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported in July that rock blasting on the I-70 Floyd Hill project was substantially complete. Crews set off 211 blasts and removed more than 765,511 tons of material, and CDOT said motorists could expect a significant decrease in daily traffic holds. Occasional blasting will still be needed as work continues.
The project has now moved into bridge building, and bridge work is scheduled overnight. The Denver Post reported on Oct. 12 that eastbound I-70 between Idaho Springs and Hidden Valley/Central City Parkway would narrow to one lane from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Oct. 19. During that closure, eastbound drivers use the Idaho Springs off-ramp and County Road 314 to rejoin I-70 at Hidden Valley. The eastbound off-ramp to Hidden Valley/Central City Parkway closes at 9 p.m. Sunday and reopens at 6 a.m. Oct. 23. Westbound I-70 at U.S. 6 has two overnight closures, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20, with traffic routed through the U.S. 6 ramps.
All of this serves a new concrete bridge that will eventually carry westbound traffic over the current alignment and across Clear Creek. CDOT told the Post to expect more overnight closures in both directions from mid-November through mid-December, but it has not published exact dates. The quickest way to get them is CDOT's text alert line: text floydhill to 21000.
That mid-November to mid-December window covers the town's two big late-fall Saturdays and the opening of Georgetown's holiday market. Daytime plans should hold up. A late drive home from Denver on a work night is the trip most likely to hit a detour.
Some of the work will outlast the project. CDOT is building a noise wall along westbound I-70 in eastern Idaho Springs, west of the Veterans Memorial Tunnels. The wall will be about 16 feet tall and 620 feet long, and CDOT says it will significantly reduce traffic and industrial noise for nearby residents. A one-mile stretch of the Clear Creek Greenway between U.S. 6/Exit 244 and Hidden Valley/Exit 243 has been closed since October 2023 and is expected to stay closed through 2029. Other segments of the Greenway remain open. CDOT expects I-70 to be in its new alignment in 2028 and the full project to wrap up in 2029.
Halloween Happens in Two Places
Oct. 31 falls on a Saturday this year, and Idaho Springs has two Halloween events at opposite ends of the day.
- Morning, Chicago Creek Road. The Clear Creek Metropolitan Recreation District's Zombie Fun Run starts at 10 a.m. at 320 Chicago Creek Road. Runners can choose a 5K or a one-mile route, and the Visit Clear Creek listing mentions costumes, candy and prizes.
- Later, Miner Street. The Zombie Party on Miner brings trick-or-treating, costume specials and themed food and drinks, with activity centered near 16th Street, according to Visit Idaho Springs.
These are the last items on the town's events page right now. The listing currently runs only through Oct. 31, so nothing for December is confirmed there yet. What comes next has to be pieced together from the county calendar and a few nearby towns.
November Is Two Saturdays, Both Close to Home
With summer crowds gone and ski crowds not yet here, the November calendar is mostly built for people who live in Clear Creek County.
Saturday, Nov. 7. The CCMRD Pumpkin Smash runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the Idaho Springs Sports and Events Complex. It is the event for retiring porch pumpkins a week after Halloween. That same weekend, the Georgetown Loop Railroad starts its holiday season. Santa's Lighted Forest and Santa's Rocky Mountain Adventure begin Nov. 6 and run through Dec. 24. The railroad's event page describes more than 300,000 lights, with Santa on the departures before Christmas.
Saturday, Nov. 28. The Idaho Springs Tree Lighting runs from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Citizens Park, 1545 Miner Street. It falls two days after Thanksgiving. The Mighty Argo is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and the Argo says its holiday hours may vary, so it is worth checking before planning a visit that week.
The overnight I-70 closures are expected to start somewhere between those two Saturdays. Both events end before dark, so neither one should run into the overnight closure hours.
The December Handoff Plays Out Over Twelve Days
Early December is when Idaho Springs moves from one season's attractions to the next. Between Dec. 1 and Dec. 12, the dates fall in this order:
- Dec. 1, 12:01 a.m. Virginia Canyon Mountain Park closes for the season through March 31, 2027.
- Dec. 5–6. The first weekend of the 66th annual Georgetown Christmas Market.
- Dec. 12. Echo Mountain's projected opening day. The second Georgetown market weekend runs Dec. 12–13.
Virginia Canyon Mountain Park is the summer attraction that closes. The Colorado Mountain Bike Association describes it as a multi-use public trail system with close to 14 miles of directional downhill bike trails, hiking trails and technical blue, black and advanced lines. The Mighty Argo's FAQ adds that the park has no green beginner downhill trails because the terrain is too steep for them. Access is free for anyone who rides or hikes up, and the Mighty Argo cable car is an optional paid lift. COMBA's page is inconsistent about how much of the build-out is finished. One section says Phase Three is open, while another says Phase 3 is still under construction. Either way, the trails close to the public on the first of the month.
Echo Mountain is the winter attraction that opens. Colorado Public Radio's 2026-27 resort opening table lists the ski area as "Projected Dec. 12, 2026." That is a projection rather than a date the resort has announced, so it could still change.
The Georgetown Christmas Market has free admission, free parking and a free shuttle. It sets up three outdoor marketplaces with carolers, Santa Lucia processions, horse-and-wagon rides, food and artisans. The Georgetown Loop's New Year's Train follows from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.
The market's second weekend and Echo's projected opening fall on the same Saturday, Dec. 12. That is also around the time CDOT's overnight closure window is expected to end. If the dates hold, the area's two biggest December draws arrive just as the bridge closures wind down.
What Stays Open the Whole Time
While the trail park closes and the ski hill waits for opening day, three Idaho Springs attractions keep their regular schedules.
- The Mighty Argo. The cable car runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The mill tour runs daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with departures every hour, subject to schedule changes. Once the bike park closes on Dec. 1, the cable car ride is purely for the view.
- Phoenix Gold Mine. Daily hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the underground tour runs year-round. The mine does not post a separate winter schedule.
- Indian Hot Springs. The site lists weekday and weekend hours for its pools, caves, tubs and spa, and shows no seasonal change for winter.
All three are inside Idaho Springs, so getting to them does not require crossing the Floyd Hill work zone. In the weeks when the overnight closures are most likely, that matters.
Miners Feast Showed What the Shoulder Season Can Draw
The Oct. 3 Miners Feast drew a sellout crowd to Miner Street with nine or more local restaurants on a single wristband. The Courant's story does not list the participating businesses, and Visit Idaho Springs has no events posted for the six weeks between Oct. 31 and Echo Mountain's projected opening. Until the ski season starts, the Nov. 28 tree lighting at Citizens Park is the one confirmed date on Miner Street.
